Throughout my life, sports have not only been a passion but also a powerful tool for developing key qualities like focus and discipline. These traits have played a crucial role in my journey from high school athlete to a real estate professional and father of three.
The Foundation: High School Sports and Eagle Scout Journey
My athletic journey began in high school, where I played football and volleyball for four years and basketball for two. I learned early on that achieving success in sports takes dedication. Football taught me how to collaborate with teammates toward a common goal, while volleyball sharpened my coordination and communication skills. Basketball added an element of strategy, requiring quick thinking and adaptation on the court.
Alongside my athletic commitments, I was also working toward becoming an Eagle Scout—a process that demanded planning, problem-solving, and the persistence to see tasks through to completion. Whether I was training for a game or finishing my Eagle Scout project, each experience taught me that focus and discipline are essential to success.
College and Competitive Volleyball: Raising the Bar
After high school, I continued to pursue volleyball at a competitive level in college. This experience raised my athletic performance and mental game. College sports are grueling, and the competition is fierce. This pushed me to further develop my discipline. I had to balance academics, sports, and personal life, which taught me time management and goal-setting—skills that are directly transferable to business. The pressure to perform at a high level also taught me how to handle setbacks and failure, a valuable lesson when dealing with business challenges.
Golf: A Game of Precision and Patience
As I transitioned into adult life, I picked up golf, a sport that requires a great deal of patience, focus, and precision. The nature of golf forces you to stay present and maintain mental discipline, as the smallest lapse in focus can lead to a bad shot. This was a pivotal moment in realizing how the mindset developed through sports could benefit my personal and professional life.
Golf has also taught me the importance of consistency and resilience. In real estate, consistency in approach and persistence through challenges are crucial to long-term success. Like golf, the work doesn’t always yield immediate results, but with patience and steady effort, progress is made over time.
The Connection to Business and Life
Focus and discipline gained through sports have been cornerstones of my career in real estate. Just as I trained hard for sports and focused on my goals, I apply the same principles to my business. Whether I’m helping clients find their dream homes or working on my own goals—such as owning rental properties or growing my team—the foundation of focus and discipline has guided me.
In business, as in sports, there will be obstacles, losses, and tough days. The ability to remain disciplined through setbacks, to stay focused on the long-term vision, and to push through adversity is what truly makes the difference. I’ve learned that success is not always linear and often requires hard work behind the scenes. My athletic background has given me the resilience to weather these storms, whether in sports or real estate.
Staying Focused in Life
Athletics have also shaped my approach to personal life. Whether it’s making time for family, exercising, or pursuing personal goals, the discipline I’ve gained has made it easier to stay on track. It’s easy to get distracted by the noise of daily life, but through sports, I’ve learned the value of pushing forward with a steady focus, not allowing anything to derail the progress.
Being an athlete has shaped who I am today, both in my professional endeavors and personal life. The discipline to wake up early for practice, focus on improving, and remain consistent through challenges has helped me succeed in real estate and beyond. As I continue to grow in my career and life, the lessons learned through sports remain a guiding force in everything I do.
