Spring Break Getaway: Gulf Shores with the In-Laws and Traveling with Kids
Spring break is right around the corner, and we are gearing up for a much-needed family getaway! Starting Friday, we’ll be heading down to Gulf Shores for 10 days to spend some quality time with the in-laws. With the Gulf as our backdrop, we’ll be fishing, playing in the sand, golfing, and indulging in some of the freshest seafood around. It’s the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy the sunny shores.
However, traveling with young kids—Skylar (9) and Teagan (6)—can sometimes feel like a logistical challenge. With excitement and anticipation filling the air, I know it’s also going to be a bit of a whirlwind. But we’re ready to make this trip enjoyable for everyone! Here are some tips and advice for traveling with kids, ensuring a smooth and fun vacation for the whole family.
1. Prepare for Travel Delays and Be Flexible
Traveling with young children can sometimes be unpredictable. Whether it’s a flight delay or an extra-long stop for a snack break, being flexible is key. Bring along extra snacks, activities, and patience to keep the kids entertained and comfortable while waiting.
2. Pack Smart and Stay Organized
The key to a stress-free trip starts with packing. Make sure you pack a carry-on with essential items like snacks, water, medications, a change of clothes, and favorite toys or books. Use packing cubes or ziplock bags to organize clothing and other items, making it easier to find what you need.
3. Create a Travel Entertainment Kit
Skylar and Teagan love their screen time, but it’s important to mix it up with activities that don’t rely on devices. Coloring books, puzzles, travel-friendly board games, and even audiobooks can keep the kids engaged and entertained during long travel times.
4. Keep a Routine as Much as Possible
Even though you’re on vacation, try to maintain a routine for the kids. This includes consistent meal times and bedtime routines, which can help them feel more comfortable and less overwhelmed in a new environment.
5. Make Time for Rest
A busy itinerary can be exciting, but it’s essential to factor in some downtime for everyone. Plan for a few hours of relaxation every day—whether it’s a quiet moment in the condo overlooking the Gulf or a nap to recharge for the next adventure.
6. Involve the Kids in Planning
Let Skylar and Teagan be a part of the planning process by asking them what activities they’re most excited to do on the trip. When kids have a say in the itinerary, they’re more likely to look forward to the experience.
7. Pack for the Weather and Activities
Gulf Shores can get warm and sunny, but it’s always good to be prepared for unpredictable weather. Bring sun protection like hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Also, pack swimsuits, sand toys, and beachwear to ensure the kids have everything they need for playing in the sand and surf.
8. Be Ready for the Beach
Kids love the beach, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. Bring a beach tent or umbrella for shade, a cooler for cold drinks, and a towel to keep the kids comfortable. Don’t forget the snacks and extra sunscreen—beach days can be long, and keeping the kids well-fed and protected is essential!
9. Fishing and Golfing with Kids
Fishing is a great family activity, and I’m sure Skylar and Teagan will have a blast. However, fishing can test a child’s patience, so bring some fun distractions. Maybe teach them how to cast or let them decorate their own fishing poles. When it comes to golfing, make it a fun experience by playing a casual round where everyone can enjoy being outside and running around.
10. Stay Calm During Tantrums or Meltdowns
Let’s be real—traveling can be stressful, and young children sometimes have meltdowns. If a tantrum strikes, stay calm and remember that it’s part of the process. Take a break, walk it off, and let them release some energy if they’re feeling frustrated.
11. Schedule Kid-Friendly Activities
In between the fishing and golfing, make sure to include activities that will keep the kids entertained. Look for local attractions like aquariums, nature centers, or children’s museums that the whole family can enjoy together.
12. Don’t Forget the Camera
This trip is going to be filled with memories. From playing in the sand to enjoying a delicious seafood dinner, don’t forget to capture the moments! Take plenty of family photos, and encourage the kids to take their own snapshots to preserve their perspective of the trip.
13. Use a Family Checklist
It’s easy to forget something when you’re packing for the whole family. Create a checklist of items everyone will need, from diapers to golf clubs. This simple step ensures you don’t leave behind important essentials like medicines, swim gear, or favorite stuffed animals.
14. Practice Safety
Keep safety in mind while enjoying your activities. Whether it’s ensuring the kids wear life vests while fishing or using sun protection during outdoor adventures, staying safe is the priority. If you’re exploring the water or the golf course, always be mindful of their whereabouts and comfort level.
By following these tips, our family vacation in Gulf Shores will be an unforgettable experience. The combination of relaxing beach time, exciting outdoor activities, and quality family bonding will make this trip something we cherish forever. So, bring on the Gulf Coast, the fishing rods, the golf clubs, and of course, the sandcastles. Here’s to a fantastic spring break for the Devall family!
